There have been some changes in the LEED accreeditation process. They have added 3 tiers. The first being LEED Green Associate.
LEED Green Associate is an individual that has successfully passed the exam to achieve LEED Green Associate status. This accreditation is for professionals who want to demonstrate green building expertise in non-technical fields of practice, GBCI has created the LEED Green Associate credential, which denotes basic knowledge of green design, construction, and operations. You must have had documented involvement on a LEED-registered projectOR employment (or previous employment) in a sustainable field of work OR engagement in (or completion of) an education program that addresses green building principles.
The next level is LEED Accredited Professional with Specialty
A LEED AP is an individual that has successfully passed the exam to achieve LEED Accredited Professional status. The LEED AP credential signifies an advanced depth of knowledge in green building practices; it also will reflect the ability to specialize in a particular LEED Rating System. The LEED AP exam is divided into two parts, the first part demonstrates general knowledge of green building practices and the second part is a specialty exam; Operations and Maintenance, Homes, Building Design and Construction, Interior Design and Construction, or Neighborhood Development.
You must have experience in the form of documented professional experience on a LEED project, within the last 3 years, with verification through LEED Online or employer attestation. They guide design and construction teams through the LEED process and offer ideas and strategies in achieving LEED ranking.
The next level is a LEED Fellow. This level is still in development. They will announce the details next year.
These new levels make sure that you have the latest knowledge and are given the full recognition for LEED in your field. It seems like more work, but it is worth it in the end.
