All Natural?

To continue with the topic of greenwashing and elaborating on often misused and under explain terms, we will focus on the term "natural". Although the term "Natural" is not often used in the HVAC industry. It is often used when speaking about many items that are "green" or "sustainable." I think it best to include it in our list of terms.

Natural defined by Dictionary.com:
1. existing in or formed by nature ( opposed to artificial): a natural bridge.
2. based on the state of things in nature; constituted by nature: Growth is a natural process.
11. having undergone little or no processing and containing no chemical additives: natural food; natural ingredients. Compare organic ( def. 11 ) .
25. not treated, tanned, refined, etc.; in its original or raw state: natural wood; natural cowhide.

To look at this term quickly, it may also be a Synonym of organic, green and good for the environment, but when used in advertising unfortunately this is not always true. There are many ways that the term natural can be used for products that are not necessarily good for the environment. There is no legal definition for "natural or all natural."
Technically Coal is natural, even though burning coal has negative environmental impact. Natural gas is a common term, which also carries some negative effects for the environment, although considered one of the better forms of traditional energy. There was a period of time Pizza Hut® was using the term Natural in their advertising. Well technically the ingredients are, but that does not mean they are good for you. Fruits and vegetables can all be considered natural no matter how they have been treated during the growing process.

Although "Natural" is not a key term in the HVAC field it is important to pay attention to the terms around you. Next week we will drive deeper into more greenwashing terms.

Energy Efficiency Funding in Connecticut versus Federal

It is hard to tell what direction energy efficienct funding will go. The Federal Government may be making huge cuts to energy efficiency and green technology funding, but it may be a little time until we know for sure what is going to happen. But Connecticut is moving in its own direction, continuing and even increasing funding for energy efficient projects. The new legislation SB 1243 that was signed by Governor Malloy in July, makes huge strides forward. SB 1243 is an act concerning the establishment of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and planning for Connecticut's Energy Future. The bill merges the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Department of Public Utility Control (DPUC) into the newly created Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP). The legislation also allocates $2 mil in funding/grants for cogeneration, as well as continuing much of the funding for solar pv, solar thermal, including grant programs, tax rebate...

EPA creates a Building Performace Program

The EPA just recently rolled out a program to help utilities and their partners, help businesses with the programs and funding offered by local utilities. So this will work with the programs that are already in place. Currently they are testing the program with Energy Star partners Commonwealth Edison, Mass Save, MidAmerican, National Grid, New Jersey's Clean Energy Program, Pacific Gas & Electric, Southern California Edison and Focus on Energy. The program was modeled after their residential program. The EPA's Press Release states: The program will help energy efficiency programs achieve deeper, more comprehensive energy savings in commercial buildings by: * Packaging EPA’s successful business energy management and building upgrade strategies along with the powerful ENERGY STAR brand to enable programs to harvest more energy savings from commercial buildings. * Targeting businesses interested in an ongoing relationship with their utility or state program sponsor around st...
